Western Australian Government fails to ensure state Animal Welfare Act is enforced.

Animal Welfare Act 2002 states

  • (a) promote and protect the welfare, safety and health of animals;
  • (b) ensure the proper and humane care and management of all animals in accordance with generally accepted standards; and
  • (c) reflect the community’s expectation that people who are in charge of animals will ensure that they are properly treated and cared for.

How can the WA Government ensure proper and humane care and management of all animals when they have no trained State Animal Welfare Inspectors?

Successful Prosecutions - Dawson | Rodway | Doak

Awaiting on Trial - Laird | Mattsen

Result - Westpork Pty Ltd case withdrawn

The prosecutions for throwing a live sheep from the top level of a truck and electrically shock prodding the face of a sheep’s head are not isolated incidents. It is simply that no law enforcement authority has had the guts to prosecute…

The past success of the State Animal Welfare Unit Inspectorate to take on the 'politically difficult or sensitive' cases appears reason enough for the current State Government to remove their funding. The Unit is no longer able to investigate new cases reported to them, however they are actively pursuing cases they were given a number of months ago. Truth is, the Governments wants it to look like they care and animal welfare is a priority but the reality is essentially the State Animal Welfare Act is not being actively upheld.

Perhaps the Animal Welfare Unit is too successful?

and the suffering of pigs

If mulesed sheep do not end up covered in flies with maggots devouring their flesh on Australian farms;

they may end up slowly dying on a rusting stinking boat to the Middle East, or slowly dying of thirst on a truck in the Middle East, or being slaughtered while fully conscious.
